Today's catch
Fresh fish from the Gulf of Salerno, chosen every morning. The menu changes with the seasons; the specials change with the day's catch.
kitchen & wine cellar · since 2017
An old fishermen's quarter two minutes from the Cathedral. The catch arrives every morning, the menu turns with the seasons. Over 300 wine labels and a kitchen that is gluten free by default.
Salerno · 2017
Il Gozzo sits in Largo Conservatorio Vecchio, one of the loveliest hidden corners of Salerno: bare stone vaults, pale wood, warm light. Chef Bruno Aversa cooks whatever the fish market offers that same morning, with short cooking times and a handful of well-chosen ingredients. If you are visiting the city, this is a real seafood restaurant, five minutes on foot from San Matteo Cathedral and the seafront promenade.
Why eat here
Fresh fish from the Gulf of Salerno, chosen every morning. The menu changes with the seasons; the specials change with the day's catch.
We fry with rice flour only, and gluten-free pasta has its own dedicated boiler. Almost the whole menu is gluten free, at no extra cost.
A cellar carved into the rock: Campania, Italy, Champagne and French sparkling wines. We will guide you.
Five minutes on foot from San Matteo Cathedral, the seafront and the cruise terminal.
Menu
A selection from our menu, which turns through the year with the seasons. Every day the specials from the catch are added to it.
A tasting chosen by the chef, between the garden and the Gulf.
With parmesan fondue.
Three tartares side by side, chosen by the chef.
Fresh Campanian pasta and shellfish.
With caramelised Tropea onions.
Our classic, also available gluten free.
Gluten free
No wheat flour is used for frying in this kitchen: we fry with rice flour only, for everyone. And gluten-free pasta has its own boiler, so the cooking water is never shared. A coeliac guest can order almost the entire menu.
Wine cellar
Next to the dining room, a stone vault from the old fishermen's quarter holds our selection: Fiano, Greco and Falanghina from Campania, great Italian whites, Champagne and after-dinner spirits.
The chef
Raised in Salerno's restaurant world alongside his father Rosario, trained in serious kitchens, he now runs Il Gozzo on one idea: good fish should be respected, not decorated.

Far more than options. We fry with rice flour only and gluten-free pasta has a dedicated boiler: almost the whole menu is gluten free, at no extra cost. Only 2 dishes on the menu contain gluten and cannot be adapted: bao bun with fried prawns and cantuccini with passito wine.
In the warm months we have tables in the square in front of the restaurant. If you would prefer to sit outside, write it in the booking notes: we will do our best, weather permitting.
Yes, a few dishes: aubergine parmigiana, three vegetables and linguine alla Nerano. We are not a vegetarian restaurant, but nobody leaves hungry.
