Salerno · Seafood restaurant
In the old town, five minutes from the Cathedral: raw fish, seafood pasta and the daily catch, cooked briefly and simply.
There is no fixed year-round card at Il Gozzo: it turns with the seasons, because oily fish, shellfish and molluscs are not at their best in the same months. Within that card, every morning the chef goes to the fish market and picks what the Gulf of Salerno actually has, and the specials of the day come from that — the floor team talks you through them at the table. It is why the printed menu is short: we would rather serve a few dishes made with produce that is worth eating.
Our cooking moves along three lines. The raw bar — tuna tartare, pink prawn carpaccio, langoustines and oysters — blast-frozen as EU food-safety law requires and dressed as lightly as possible. The pasta, from spaghetti with clams to linguine allo scoglio, all available with gluten-free pasta. And the catch of the day, grilled or all'acqua pazza, served whole, filleted and cleaned to perfection in the kitchen.
Il Gozzo is a restaurant for a long dinner, not a quick meal. The room is small, under the stone vaults of the old fishermen's quarter, with a handful of tables and an outdoor terrace under umbrellas in the warm months. The cellar holds over 300 labels and the service is built to accompany the meal, not to rush it. Book ahead: at weekends and in high season tables go days in advance.
With parmesan fondue.
Subject to daily availability.
Fresh Campanian pasta and shellfish.
Rice flour only: gluten free.
The catch arrives fresh from the fish market every morning. As European food-safety law requires, products served raw are blast-frozen first: that is a mandatory safety measure, not a sign of lower quality.
We can build a tasting route around the catch of the day. Mention it when you book or talk to us at the table and we will put it together with you.
Spaghetti with clams and the roasted octopus with potato cream. In courgette season, though, spaghetti alla Nerano changes the ranking.
Il Gozzo is a seafood restaurant: the menu is almost entirely from the sea. Guests who do not eat fish can have meat dishes if they ask in advance, and will also find vegetarian dishes.
The kitchen serves until 11:30 pm. We suggest arriving by 10 pm so you can take your time over dinner.
Direct booking — no commission, no credit card. You get an email confirmation and a reminder the day before.
